Styx Concert at Little Creek. First three songs, no flash.

Well this was a fun gig for sure.  I did the first three songs with no flash thing.  I shot everything with my 17-55 mm lens. Some of the shots were at 17mm, that's how close I was to the action.

I really want a second D500 body.  I had my D7100 with a 35mm /1.8 and my D500 with the above mentioned lens.  The ISO control is in a different place for each camera and is actually second function button for the D7100 .

I followed advice from a very good you tube video and shot this in A mode.  Shooting in A mode makes alot of sense, when I know I will be shooting wide open all night.  I kept my eye on the shutter speed in my view finder display and adjusted the ISO to get a shutter speed of at least 1/125th.  This works well when you have a nice margin to work with where you don't need a really fast shutter and you don't have to up your ISO to insane levels.  I don't know if this technique would work so well for night football.

I've started loading IPTC profiles into my D500.

Busy, busy May

I was given a lot of theater jobs in advance so I decided now was the time to strike and get the 70-200mm f2.8 lens that I've been wanting for a couple of years.   I've been given excellent access to the theater and I'm having a good time.

I have six color pictures in this week's paper including the front page.

Some spot news

I had never photographed in a theater before this month so this month has been a learning experience for me.  I learned that I need to use spot metering in the theater.  I used shutter priority set to 1/125 and ISO 800.  Then I had to wait until the meter in my viewfinder read a f stop rather than flashing "LO" at me.  I never really paid much attention to that meter before.  I tried to get the highest F stop I could get for each shot.  I went to rehearsal for both the musical and the piano performance so I could figure out the lighting in advance.

I really like my new medium angle zoom lens, it focuses fast and accurately and it's 2.8.  It outshines my wide angle Sigma 2.8 lens due to its accurate focus.  In comparison the Sigma struggles a bit with focus.  Image stabilization on the Sigma still makes it a better lens for me then the Nikkor wide angle zoom.

Ronald Reagan's Son

I was given an assignment to photograph the Reagan Legacy Dinner.  I was given this assignment just a few hours before the start of the dinner.  Since I'm freelancing for a weekly paper I normally get my assignments days in advance.  I was told that I should dress conservatively for this job.  I really wish I had gotten closer to my subject.  I was too nervous and the room was very dark.
